About MediVtal — A Doctor-Founded Supplement Brand Built for South Africa

MediVtal

Our Story

Built from the consultation room outward.

MediVtal was founded by Dr Zakhona Ngema — a medical doctor who graduated from University of the Witwatersrand. She is a 16-year veteran of both South Africa's public and private healthcare sectors.

It was built from a pattern she kept seeing across her consulting rooms, and not from a business plan.

The patients who were doing everything right.

They were eating reasonably. Staying active. Managing their conditions. Taking their medication. And still coming back exhausted, foggy, and depleted — not from disease, but from something quieter and harder to name.

The answer, more often than not, wasn't a diagnosis. It was a deficiency.

" After 16 years in practice, I stopped being surprised by how many patients were doing everything right and still not feeling it. The gaps were real. The products to address them properly weren't. "

— Dr Zakhona Ngema, Founder

The problem

Most supplements don’t work the way most people think they do.

South Africa has specific, well-documented micronutrient gaps. Selenium-depleted soils. Widespread Vitamin D deficiency despite our sunshine. Magnesium intakes at roughly half the recommended daily amount. High rates of B12 depletion driven partly by metformin — the country's most commonly prescribed diabetes medication.

These aren't fringe statistics. They are the nutritional reality of modern South African life.

And the supplement market has largely failed to respond. Products formulated for other populations, in poorly absorbed forms, at doses too small to make a meaningful clinical difference. Cheap ingredients dressed up in expensive packaging.

" Most patients who came to me had already tried supplements. They just hadn't tried the right ones — in the right forms, at the right doses."

Our approach

How we formulate differently.

Every MediVtal product starts with the same question Dr Ngema asks in clinical practice:

If I were recommending this to a patient, what would need to be true about it?

The answer is always the same. The form needs to be bioavailable — not the cheapest option, but the one the research supports. The dose needs to match what clinical studies actually use. And the combination of nutrients needs to make physiological sense, not just look impressive on a label.

This means magnesium bisglycinate instead of magnesium oxide — because magnesium oxide absorbs at roughly 4%. Methylcobalamin instead of cyanocobalamin. Active 5-MTHF folate instead of synthetic folic acid, which up to 40% of people cannot properly convert.

Forms your body can actually absorb and use. Manufactured in South Africa. Formulated for South African adults.

Our mission

The standard we hold ourselves to.

MediVtal exists to close the gap between what clinical medicine knows about micronutrient health and what most people have access to in a supplement.

That means being honest about what the evidence supports — and what it doesn't. It means formulating products we would recommend to our own patients. And it means treating the people who buy from us as adults who deserve a straight answer about what is in their supplements and why.

We are a small, founder-led business. We launched with one product because we believe in doing one thing properly before expanding. Every formulation decision is made with clinical rigour, not commercial convenience.

I didn't start MediVtal to build a supplement brand. I started it because I couldn't find products I was confident recommending. So I built them."
